Lismore Heights Public School History
Construction of the school began on January 11, 1956.
The school was open to receive pupils on September 11, 1956. A total of 119 were enrolled.
The first Headmaster was Mr C Edwards with staff members Mrs C Lewis and Mr C J Timms.
The Minister for Education Mr R J Heffron performed the official opening on November 8, 1956.
Six months later, on May 3 1957 representations were made for more accommodation to cope with the rapid increase in enrolments. In the next 14 years many buildings were added.
They included: 1960, new Kindergarten room.
1963, two more classrooms, an office and storeroom.
1965, seperate infants department formed with an extra kindergarten classroom waiting room, cleaners store and staffroom.
1967, basement of Methodist Hall, Renwick Street, rented as school had outgrown existing buildings.
1968, a demountable classroom erected to cope with the ever increasing numbers.
1969, The new school and extensions to the primary school for a library were finished. For the first time since 1957 the school can adequately accommodate all its pupils. The new infants school includes six classrooms, a mistress's office, staffroom, storeroom, sick clinic and cleaners storeroom. With fencing and such other details as concrete work the school cost $148,000.
1970, Friday April 17, at 2pm The Member for Lismore Mr Bruce Duncan officially opens the new Lismore Heights Infants' School and Primary school library.
2009, today we have an enrolment of 200 students and a permanent staff of 15.
